Year 4 Multiplication Check

Year 4 Multiplication Check

By the end of Year 4, pupils are expected to know all of their times tables up to 12x12. The Multiplication times tables check is a statutory assessment which takes place online that gives the children a series of 25 questions to test their knowledge. These questions are all multiplication based and do not include the division.

For each of the questions, children will have 6 seconds to read, work out and type their answer before the next question automatically appears. There is no current pass or fail mark for the tests, however scores are collected nationally and reported back to parents.

Why are times tables so important?

Times tables are a vital concept as they help children to understand other mathematical concepts and build mental fluency. Knowing their times tables helps to enable your child to grasp other aspects of Maths as they apply their knowledge to other aspects such as fractions, division and percentages. It is an element of mathematical learning that assists in life-long skills.

Children should be able to recall the multiplication facts rapidly without the need to count up and back in their multiples to enable them to solve problems mentally at speed.

How are children prepared for their multiplication check?

Key times tables form part of the national curriculum and will be focused upon in Maths lessons during their time in Y1-4:

Y1 – Count in 2, 5 and 10

Y2 – Know and recall 2, 5 and 10 times tables.

Y3 – Know and recall the 3, 4 and 8 times tables.

Y4 – know and recall all times tables up to 12 x 12

Where pupils are ready to progress onto times tables sooner, these are introduced to pupils as appropriate. Pupils are also given the opportunity to continue to recall and practice times tables that they have already learnt within lessons and warmups to build long term memory and rapid recall.

Pupils in the school have access to Numbots and Times Tables Rock Stars. Numbots allows pupils to begin to understand the basic of number and once pupils are ready, they access Times Tables Rock Stars to take part in fun, interactive games. The software automatically targets questions based on the individual child’s needs.

Children have access to TT Rock Stars both in school and at home. This helps children to build their speed in answering multiplication questions while having fun in beating their personal best or competing against others in class, school, multi-academy and national competitions.

How can you help at home?

  • Set aside a few minutes each day for your child to access TT Rockstars at home.
  • Download a free times tables wall chart to display in your child’s bedroom. Ask them questions periodically to test their knowledge.
  • Learn the tricks for the 7, 9 and 12 times table.
